Most people think of the little trees in pots as BONSAI.

Bonsai are miniature trees that are grown according to guidelines developed in Japan and against the culture and philosophy of its people.

But, bonsai are not originally Japanese. Significant evidence indicates that the art form developed in China where it is known as Penjing. The guidelines and philosophies behind penjing are, therefore, quite different and in many ways less constraining on the grower and tree development than bonsai.
